Trust that no matter what you create, something good will come from it [An intention for creatives + artists]
This is an intention I first wrote in my journal. And it’s become a companion of sorts on my creative path.
Here’s the thing…
When you want to focus on creative activities and projects that you’re passionate about, it can feel vulnerable (to varying degrees of course) AND it can move you beyond the norms of how you’ve been taught to behave, think, and spend your time.
The discomfort along with the fact that our brains have a negativity bias….can lead us to thinking only about all the “bad” or “negative” things that might happen….
“What if my painting or drawing looks nothing like what I’m picturing in my mind”
“I’ll look awkward because I don’t know how to dance”
“I’ve never written a novel before, if I start writing, I don’t know if I’ll finish it”
That’s where this intention comes in.
A simple, yet potent reminder that….
Each act of creativity.
Every drop of sweat, every minute of attention you are giving to creating what matters to you, is worthwhile…no matter what you create.
What kind of good am I referring to exactly?
Take a breath in, let out a sigh and say out loud (or quietly)...
I trust that no matter what I create, something good will come from it.
By practicing it, especially while you create, you’re bringing your focus and energy back to the present, to the process. You’re allowing yourself to experience and savour any positive emotions coming from the experience of being creative and you’re helping rewire your brain to look for more of the positive (and joy).
In doing so you’ll also be reminding yourself of what it feels like to be:
…making art and all sorts of things with your hands and your imagination…
….letting go and freeing yourself (even a little) from worrying about the outcome..
….creating what matters and delights you.
I don’t practice this intention perfectly and you don’t need to either. That was never the point. Being open to believing it in the first place and then continuosly practicing it, on the other hand was/and is.
What GOOD has come from some of your creations and art (even the ones that failed, are still in progress or didn’t turn out the way you had hoped)?
